What to expect - Online dyslexia assessments

Diagnostic assessments can now be carried out online, just as robustly as in person. You'll complete a range of activities so the assessor can reach a diagnostic decision.

Why choose online: no travel, more comfortable surroundings, and access to your own refreshments.

Before your assessment

• Complete the BDA remote assessment booking pack, including pre-assessment questionnaires (a school or employer will usually need to complete one too).
• Once your date and time are confirmed, full payment is taken.
• You'll receive a link (Zoom, Teams or Skype) shortly before your session.
• Some assessors post materials in advance, to be opened only on the day.

On the day

• Sessions usually run 2 to 4 hours, with breaks.
• Join the link on time.
• Use a stable internet connection and a proper screen, not a phone or small tablet.
• Be in a private space (not a bedroom). A parent or carer nearby can help with any IT issues.
• Have a pen, lined paper, and any materials sent to you in advance.
• Wear glasses if you normally do.
• You'll need a camera and microphone so the assessor can see and hear you, and share materials with you.
• Recording isn't permitted, as materials are copyright protected.
• You may be asked to photograph or scan some items and email them during or after the session.
• Feedback may be given at the end, or you may need to wait for your written report.

After your assessment
Your assessor has 15 working days to write the report and send it to the BDA, who will email it to you within a further 5 working days
