Types of assessments and costs
Choosing to have an assessment is a personal decision, and we understand that you may have questions about which type of assessment is right for you or someone you support. We offer a range of assessment services, depending on your age, circumstances and whether the assessment is being self-funded or funded by a third party.
We want you to have the information you need to make the choice that feels right for you. You can find details of the assessment services we offer below, including what each involves, who it is suitable for and the costs.
In person dyslexia assessment (self funded)
Available for ages 8+, at the locations listed when you start your application
Remote dyslexia assessment (self funded)
For ages 12 and over who can comfortably take part in a remote session. Assessments are carried out via video platforms such as Zoom and are available when there is no assessor in your area, or if you prefer an online assessment. Appointments are usually available within one month.
In person dyscalculia assessment (self funded)
Available for ages 8+, at the locations listed in your online application. Dyscalculia assessments cannot be carried out remotely.

For schools, local authorities, universities, organisations and employers arranging funding on someone's behalf.

Dyslexia and dyscalculia assessors often book months in advance. In all cases, the earliest available date is offered.

Funding
Diagnostic assessments for dyslexia and dyscalculia are not usually funded directly by schools, colleges or other educational settings. While some settings may have access to funding that can contribute towards an assessment, there is no obligation for them to provide or fund an assessment, and arrangements vary between organisations.
Dyslexia and dyscalculia are specific learning difficulties rather than medical conditions, so diagnostic assessments are not funded by the NHS. In most cases, the cost of an assessment is therefore met by the individual, parent or employer.
In some circumstances, an employer or education setting may choose to contribute towards the cost, particularly where an assessment is needed to identify appropriate support or reasonable adjustments. It is worth checking with your school, college, university or employer to find out whether any funding is available.
From time to time, and subject to available funding, the ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ can offer Assessment bursaries to individuals to support them with the cost of accessing diagnostic assessments.
